Distribution of seats after the election
(after Brexit)

A total of 79 seats

The 2019 European elections in France took place on May 26, 2019 as part of the 2019 EU- wide European elections . In France, 74 seats in the European Parliament were initially awarded, as in 2014 , but 79 seats were elected. Five elected officials from France will move into the European Parliament after the UK has left the EU .

Six parties passed the 5 percent threshold in the election: the Rassemblement National led by Marine Le Pen with 23.3%, closely followed by the liberal La République en Marche of President Emmanuel Macron with 22.4%. The Greens ( EELV ) achieved 13.5%. The conservative Les Républicains and the two left-wing parties Parti socialiste with 6.2% and La France insoumise with 6.3% landed behind with 8.5 %.

Electoral system

For this election, the government of President Emmanuel Macron has ended the 2004 division of France into eight constituencies . Voting is made in nationwide lists with a threshold clause of 5 percent. The law was supported by a large majority of the parties represented in the National Assembly.

In the 2014 election , the right-wing extremist Front National (FN) (since then renamed “Rassemblement National” (RN)) became the strongest party. The planned establishment of an FN-led parliamentary group in the European Parliament could only be realized one year after the election. The FN provides 20 of the 37 members of the Europe of Nations and Freedom Group, making it the smallest group in Parliament.

In the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2017 , the two traditionally largest parties, the Parti socialiste (PS) and the liberal-conservative Les Républicains (LR) suffered heavy losses - for the first time in the history of the fifth republic, neither party was able to put a presidential candidate into the runoff election . The new president was Emmanuel Macron , who ran for parliamentary elections with his newly founded center party La République en Marche (LREM). The FN presidential candidate Marine Le Pen was able to enter the runoff election, but her party won only eight seats in the general election.

The turn of the year 2018/19 in France was marked by the sometimes violent protests of the yellow vests movement . Within the yellow vests movement, it was controversial whether and how the European elections should be run. In the course of January and February 2019, further yellow vest lists and parties were announced. By the end of February, the approval of the French population for the yellow vests movement collapsed, and some of the announced lists did not materialize or withdrew their candidacies, including Ingrid Levavasseur, who had announced the first list, RIC, but afterwards under significant ones suffered from personal hostility. By the beginning of May 2019, a total of 33 lists had registered for election, three of them from the environment of the yellow vests movement (“Evolution citoyenne”, “Alliance jaune” and “Mouvement pour l'initiative citoyenne”).

The election campaign was largely dominated by national issues; the escalation of the dispute between Emmanuel Macron, who personally campaigned for his party, LREM, and Marine Le Pen from the RN, who was leading or equal in the polls, was particularly influential Sought to interpret Macron's election in a referendum.
