Les Patriotes (German: Die Patrioten , abbreviation LP) is a French, right-wing extremist small party that represents nationalist and EU-skeptical issues and was created by splitting off from the Front National .

background

The party was founded in autumn 2017 by the former Vice President of the Front National, Florian Philippot . It had previously existed as a platform within the FN since spring 2017. Les Patriotes is aiming for France to leave the European Union and, in particular, the euro area immediately . According to Philippot, this is a goal that the FN no longer represents.

In October 2017 Philippot as well as Mireille d'Ornano and Sophie Montel left the FN-dominated ENF group in the European Parliament and joined the group Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy , which includes the members of the British UKIP and Alternative für Deutschland ( AfD) belonged. In November, José Evrard, a member of the National Assembly, joined the LP. Montel resigned from the party in early July 2018 and accused Philippot of forging signatures. Originally, the party aimed for an election result of over 5% in the European elections in May 2019 ; polls in the summer of 2018 were around 1% of voting intentions; In the election in May 2019, the party ultimately only achieved 0.65% and thus failed because of the 5 percent threshold in France.
