Dirk Salz (* 1962 in Bochum ) is a German artist who works with the media of drawing , painting and installation .

life and work

Dirk Salz grew up in an artistic family environment (his mother drew and painted, the grandfather played various instruments). Even in high school, Salz received private lessons in drawing, painting and art history.

After graduating from the Graf-Engelbert-Gymnasium in Bochum in 1981 and completing his military service, he first studied mining at RWTH Aachen University . In 1988 he left the RWTH and completed a retraining course to become an organizational programmer at the Siemens School of Communication and Data Technology . From 1990 to 2017, Salz worked for ERGO Versicherung , most recently as Head of IT Strategy.

Along with his studies and later also in his job, Salz painted and drew and steadily improved his craftsmanship and artistic expression. Since 1998 he has consistently sought exchange and feedback with other artists and lecturers. In the search for the actual core of his work, the following years are characterized by a gradual reduction of artistic and painterly means.

Opacity, transparency, color and composition are painterly relevant problems for Salz. He is constantly working on these. He reads Kant , Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and finds his subject through their philosophy and epistemology - the investigation of reality or the human perception of reality.

Dirk Salz has been working as a freelance artist since 2002. Today, Dirk Salz's work is represented nationally and internationally by galleries and is part of numerous collections.

Work groups

painting

From 2005 onwards, under the influence of Gerhard Richter's abstract pictures, multi-layered squeegee oil paintings emerged, which differ from them, however, through a color reduction in the individual work and an additional structuring of the image surface through horizontal or vertical 'squeegee strokes' as well as the juxtaposition of monochrome-colored surfaces and process resulting 'random filler structures differences. Retaining the complexity, Salt switched to transparent materials. At first he used a transparent acrylic resin binder, which was mixed with pure pigments. Later, with the intention of integrating the viewer and the room, the natural resin Dammar was added, which lets the work reflect with its sheen. At the same time, Salz worked on a further 'neutralization' of his painting style.

In 2008, with two-component synthetic resins, he found the material that comes closest to his intention of an initially objective appearance, but at second glance it is highly subjective. In the following years, through further consequent reduction and conscious setting in relation to certain selective colors, selected formats, the form and physicality of the image carrier, the targeted use of reflection and mattness as well as process and material-related 'coincidences' distinctive position. It is most likely to be assigned to Concrete Art , but dispenses with dogmatic shackles and indulges in an almost playful freedom within a self-imposed framework. Salz also transfers his painterly concepts into space by creating objects made of colored glass that protrude into the space or by changing spaces through installation.

drawing

In 2007, under the strong influence of the spatula work at the time, the first drawings were created which, although initially consisting exclusively of horizontal lines and gaps, gave the impression of an upright all-over. The material is deliberately very simple (pencil and paper) in order to represent a real counterpoint to the material-heavy painting. The resulting delicate drawings thematize the tense coexistence and coexistence of chance and rule. Later, in addition to vertical lines and grids, circular compositions also complement the subject.
