history
The village of Saint-Ouen can be traced back to the 1st century AD.
The industrial boom began with the expansion of the port and connection to the railway network . Between 1861 and 1896 the population jumped from 3,300 to 30,700. Saint-Ouen became an important suburb of the capital Paris . The city has always been the destination of immigrants of various nationalities, in recent years especially from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa . The industrial structural change since the 1970s also hit industry in Saint-Ouen hard: Unemployment was at times 20%. To compensate for this, numerous administration and office buildings have been settled, especially in the Docks de Saint-Ouen , former shipyards, such as Danone , Citroën , OCP Répartition , Alstom or Bosch France have locations or their headquarters here. The working-class city was ruled by mayors of the PCF without interruption from 1945 to 2014. In the 2014 local elections, in which the left parties lost numerous former strongholds, William Delannoy, who is close to the UDI , was elected as the new mayor.
