La Courneuve is a French city in the Seine-Saint-Denis department with 43,054 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The city is located about four kilometers north-northeast of Paris and today forms part of its banlieue . The inhabitants call themselves Courneuviens .

history

The name La Courneuve comes from the Latin curia nova or curtis nova , "new area", and refers to the settlers that Suger , abbot of the Saint-Denis monastery, settled here.

At the end of the 19th century industrialization began and the community became a center of the labor movement .

During the German occupation, the trade unionists formed the basis of the active Resistance , especially through Suzanne Masson . On August 15, 1944, an attack by the Resistance succeeded in capturing a truck with submachine guns that was used by the Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI). The city is the target of several Allied bombings in 1943 and particularly in August 1944. On April 12, 1944, twelve people died in an attack. On August 10, an attack on a German gasoline depot resulted in eight deaths and hundreds of homes destroyed (123 entirely, 350 partially).

The post-war period was here, as in almost all suburbs of Paris, characterized by the construction of large high-rise housing estates in prefabricated buildings ( grands logements ). In the 1970s, the municipality was hit hard by the decline in traditional industries and structural change .

During the riots in France in 2005 , the then French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy made the memorable remark that the residential areas in the suburbs would be cleaned up with the Kärcher ( On va nettoyer au Kärcher ces cités ).

geography

The city has an area of 752  ha . The neighboring municipalities are in the arrondissement of Saint-Denis: Aubervilliers , Saint-Denis and Stains (individual canton); in the Arrondissement of Bobigny: Bobigny , Le Bourget and Dugny in the canton of Le Bourget, Drancy and Pantin .

Georges-Valbon Park

The Georges-Valbon Park (colloquially often: Parc de La Courneuve ) is the third largest in the Île-de-France region with a size of 400 ha after the Bois de Boulogne (1000 ha) and the Bois de Vincennes (850 ha), and receives around two million visitors a year. It extends over five municipalities, La Courneuve, Saint-Denis, Stains, Dugny and Garges-lès-Gonesse (Val-d'Oise). There is an equestrian center here. Managed by the General Council ( Conseil Général ), the park offers workshops, events, nature excursions and exhibitions throughout the year.

The press festival of the communist newspaper L'Humanité takes place in the areas bordering the park that are not open to the public .

The Central Archives of the French Foreign Ministry ( Center des Archives diplomatiques ) are located in La Courneuve .

politics

population

La Courneuve is one of the municipalities with the lowest average income and one of the highest percentage of immigrants in France. According to a census from 1999, 65.3% of young people under the age of 18 had a migration background , i. H. at least one parent was not born in France.

economy

In 2004 there were 14 213 jobs and 766 private companies here. Although the city's residents are mostly poor, the city itself has a not insignificant tax potential through an industrial area shared with Le Bourget and several industrial sites in the city. However, several large companies (Babcock, Meccano, Champagnole) have closed while others ( Alstom - Rateau ) have severely reduced their jobs . The most important remaining ones include the Orangina bottling plant , KDI (metallurgy), the logistics company UPS , the recycling group Paprec and parts of the CNIM group of companies .
