The International Federation of American Football ( IFAF ) is the world association for American football based in La Courneuve , France .

history

Even if American football is a typical American sport , it is practiced in almost 100 countries around the world. IFAF was founded in 1998 to bundle global activities outside the US professional leagues NFL and NFL Europe . In the same year, the International American Football Federation (IAFF) was founded, a second world association. After the first World Cup in 1999, the two associations merged to form the International Federation of American Football at a conference in Paris in 2000 .

A milestone was reached when IFAF was admitted to the IOC recognized General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). Only then was it possible to take the next step, applying to participate in the World Games . At the 2005 in Duisburg , American football was able to present itself for the first time as an "invitation sport" at the World Games. Over 18,000 spectators attended the final in Duisburg's MSV Arena . A total of 28,000 spectators attended all four games in the tournament, which Germany won.

After the cancellation of the IFAF World Cup 2015 in Sweden for financial reasons, the event was moved to the USA. In February 2015, Tommy Wiking resigned as President of IFAF due to the event's cancellation. Even before the start of the 2015 IFAF Congress in Canton (Ohio) , the world association split, as the resigned President Wiking was not allowed to sit on the Presidium of the Congress. A group based in New York then elected Roope Norenen as interim president in September 2015 and Richard MacLean as president in 2016. The other group, based in Paris, continued to recognize Tommy Wiking as president.

In September 2016, IFAF Paris suspended six nations for failing to provide player anti-doping information. The suspended nations were the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Finland, and Denmark. A group of European associations wanted the sport to be reunified during a meeting in Rome in December 2016. The 2017 World Championships were organized by the Paris Group, while IFAF New York hosted the 2017 Women's World Cup.

In September 2017, the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) ruled that Wiking had officially resigned as president. And on March 1, 2018, MacLean was declared legitimate president of IFAF by a final decision by CAS, according to a letter from MacLean and IFAF.

IFAF stated in the letter that CAS had made its final arbitration award and that Noronen's election as interim president at the 2015 IFAF Congress in Ohio Canton was valid and that MacLean was duly elected President of IFAF on September 17, 2016 and he was the current President of IFAF. The CAS judgment made it possible for IFAF to act as a unified organization again. The decisions of IFAF Paris were declared null and void. In October 2018, the Swiss Federal Supreme Court rejected a complaint by Wiking against the earlier CAS decision in favor of IFAF.
