KVIrc is a free , graphical IRC client for Windows , Linux and other Unix derivatives as well as Mac OS . The K in K Visual IRC stood for the dependency on KDE , which is no longer mandatory from version 2.0.0. The project started in 1998.

Functions

KVIrc supports multiple simultaneous connections to servers (optionally with SSL and / or IPv6 ). In addition to Unicode and ISO-8859- * encodings, KVIrc also supports Asian and native Windows character sets . A special feature is the intelligent coding, which allows Unicode (Linux / Unix standard) to be used together with one of the other character sets such as Windows-1252 .

In addition to the widespread mIRC formatting codes for bold, underlined or colored font, KVIrc has graphic emoticons (which can be switched off) and the option of defining an avatar that all compatible IRC clients can request and display.

KVIrc can be expanded with the on-board scripting language KVS , based on C ++ , sh and Perl, similar to the mIRC scripting language MSL. You can also activate encryption using Mircryption (compatible with Blowfish ) or Rijndael for channel , query or DCC connections .

With the split window mode , the chat window can be divided into two separate ones. One window then only contains the conversations, while the other shows the processes in the channel - e.g. B. Entering and leaving of users - indicates. The window size is variable.

A socket monitor supports the developers and users also in that it shows the raw data exchange with the IRC server on demand, making it easy to make mistakes and / or deviation can determine from the RFC.

development

Stable releases are rarely published. However, so-called snapshots are regularly provided on the website , which contain newer functions. Suggestions from users who express minor requests via the official chat are sometimes implemented and published directly. Development has been taking place via GitHub since August 2015 .

With the release of KVIrc 4.0.0, code name Insomnia, which  uses Qt 4, support for KVIrc3 was completely discontinued; the version currently under development KVIrc 5.0.0 supports Qt 5.
