He is a member of the Swiss Olympic Association , the European American Football Association (IFAF Europe) and the World Association (IFAF). The SAFV issues the licenses for the cheerleaders of the clubs, but the cheerleading is organized by the umbrella organization of cheerleaders, the Cheerleading and Cheerdance Association Switzerland (CCVS).

The current name was established in 1987. Today 30 clubs are affiliated with the association. In 2016 he issued 1,957 licenses. The SAFV is based in Oetwil an der Limmat, ZH. In addition to the national American football operation , the SAFV also organizes the national American football team .

history

The SAFV was founded on December 26, 1982 as the Swiss Football League in Lugano. The first president, Massimo Monti, was a former player in a Milan team and at the same time the founder of the now defunct Lugano Seagulls . At first, the Seagulls only played against Italian teams. But with the establishment of further clubs in Switzerland, the first Swiss championship with eight teams could take place in 1986. A year later the association was renamed the Swiss American Football Association. 1987 was also the first year that Swiss clubs took part in European competitions. Two years later, in 1989, the SAFV was accepted into the Swiss Olympic Association.

In 2003 membership of the EFAF , the former European American Football Association, and the IFAF (world association) were added.

In 2006, American football's media presence in Switzerland rose sharply for a short time when the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, originally from Emmental , came to Switzerland thanks to the “Swiss Roots” project.

In 2012, the Calanda Broncos became the first Swiss team to win the largest European American football competition (then the EFL ).

Due to the dissolution of the EFAF in 2014, the SAFV became part of the new European American Football Association, IFAF Europe , for the 2015 season .
