Curling in Switzerland
The Swiss have been among the best in curling since the World Curling Federation was founded . There are approximately 8,000 active curlers, only Scotland and Canada have more active curlers.
At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , where curling was held as a demonstration competition, the team around Skip Urs Dick won the gold medal. The Lausanne Olympique team, led by skip Patrick Hürlimann , achieved their first Olympic victory at the 1998 Men's Olympic Winter Games in Nagano . In 2002 the Bern AAM team won the women's silver medal and the Biel Touring GATE the men's bronze medal, and in Turin 2006 the Flims PurePower women's team won silver.
In popular sport , a Swiss championship title is awarded every year in the categories active, seniors 1 + 2, women, mixed, veterans and open-air as well as wheelchair curling. Around 200 teams take part in the eliminations and the final rounds.
The youngsters are also particularly successful. The junior teams have won ten medals (3 × gold, 3 × silver and 4 × bronze) at world championships over the past twelve years.
Overall, the men were once Olympic champions, three times world champions and seven times European champions. The women became world champions twice and European champions four times.
