The Swiss Wrestling Association (ESV) ( French Association fédérale de lutte suisse ) was founded in 1895 and comprises 5 sub-associations that exist within Switzerland. The ESV tries to further promote the most popular traditional sport in Switzerland, wrestling , and to maintain its traditions. In 1914 the ESV had only 3,411 members, in 1944 it had 13,100. Today the ESV can count on the support of over 50,000 wrestling fans. The Swiss Wrestling Association, Swiss Olympic, has been a member since November 2015 .

Emergence
In 1894, at the Swiss Wrestling Festival in Zurich, the festival president, gymnastics teacher JJ Müller, proposed the establishment of a Swiss Wrestling Association. A committee was assigned to put this project into practice. On March 11, 1895, the Swiss Wrestling Association was founded in Café Born in Bern. Fritz Flück was elected as the first chairman. The first Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival took place in Biel on August 18th .
