education
The sections of the Swiss Lifesaving Society (SLRG) offer modular training for lifeguards . For some years now, the focus of the training has been increasingly on the prevention of water accidents. In addition, it is taught how help can be provided in the event of an accident in or on the water without the rescuer putting himself in danger.
Training for young people
The SLRG offers special training courses for young lifeguards from the age of ten. In addition to teaching prevention topics, these courses enable an age-appropriate introduction to the activities of lifeguards :
- SLRG youth certification
- SLRG youth experience module
Training in the pool
In Switzerland, lifeguard training begins in swimming pools . The different performance levels build on one another:
- SLRG Brevet Basis Pool (for supervisors in monitored swimming pools)
- SLRG Brevet Plus Pool (for supervisors in unsupervised swimming pools)
- SLRG Brevet Pro Pool (for professional pool workers)
Training in open water
The large number of open water bodies in Switzerland make special demands on water rescue. The SLRG offers specific courses for different types of water:
- SLRG module lake (stagnant water)
- SLRG module river (flowing water)
- SLRG module hypothermia (cold water)
First aid training
The lifeguard training also includes basic knowledge of first aid . The SLRG offers the following courses:
- BLS-AED module ( cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator )
- Emergency aid module (recognized for driver's license applicants in accordance with Art. 10 Traffic Licensing Ordinance )
Other trainings
Trained lifeguards can receive further training in additional areas:
- SLRG module WaBo (see prevention campaign "The water and me")
- SLRG module responsible security service
Management level
The management level includes all SLRG course instructor training. A distinction is made between the following levels:
- Expert level (for trainers at the basic level)
- Instructor level (for trainers at Expert level)
Training at the Expert level begins with preliminary courses in methodology and association teaching. After these preliminary courses have been completed, the subject-specific training (pool, lake, river, etc.) follows, which must be updated every two years. For a job at the instructor level, valid training at the expert level in the relevant specialist area and regular participation in specialist conferences are required.
Training before 2011
Before the modularization of the training structure in 2011, the certification I lifeguard in combination with CPR and emergency aid courses formed the main component of the SLRG's training offer. In addition, free diving and open water courses were offered as possible further training. The course instructor training consisted of the Brevet II lifeguard and corresponding additional training in CPR, first aid, etc.
Existing Brevet I can be converted into an up-to-date training course using the new pool (WK Pool).
Prevention
In addition to the training of lifeguards, the Swiss Lifesaving Society SLRG is increasingly involved in the prevention of water and drowning accidents. The SLRG relies on a wide range of prevention campaigns.
Prevention rules
The 4 × 6 prevention rules of the SLRG form the basis for the prevention of water accidents in Switzerland. The rules of conduct are divided into the following four categories:
Prevention campaign "The water and me"
Specially trained lifeguards visit the 4 to 7 year old children in the kindergarten. They encourage children to enjoy the water in a positive and playful way and teach them how to behave safely in and around the water. The so-called water ambassadors are accompanied by Pico , the lovely plush drop of water. For the children, it is Pico in particular who teaches them 10 important water messages.
aquamap.ch
"aquamap.ch" - the lifeguard's Swiss map - was published in 2012 as a desktop version and as an app . The aim of the campaign is to create a comprehensive reference work for particularly beautiful or dangerous bathing areas and river sections in Switzerland. The SLRG is reacting to the fact that most fatal water accidents in Switzerland occur in open water.
Competitions
The SLRG organizes the Swiss championship of water rescue every year, competitions are also held annually at regional level. There are also supra-regional competitions organized by individual sections. The Swiss Youth Championships (11-16 year olds) take place every two years.
Sister companies
The SLRG is comparable to the DRK - water rescue service in Germany.
Special
The longstanding services of the SLRG were honored with a postage stamp in 2008 by the Swiss Post . The stamp shows a lifebuoy floating on the water, flanked by the numbers 1 and 0. The resulting number 100 indicates the value of the 1-franc postage stamp.
