Bargemon is a French commune with 1,365 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
Bargemon is located in the north of the department at the foot of the Varois Prealps on a ridge that protrudes into a deep basin surrounded by mountains. From the bottom of the basin, which lies at 319 m, the profile of the municipality extends to the peaks of the Col du Bel-Homme (951 m), Blaque Meyanne (1033 m) and Pierrion (1089 m) over an altitude of more than 700 meters .
history
In the cave of Belhomme there are remains of a Neolithic settlement.
In the Middle Ages, the place was first mentioned in 814 under the name Bergemulum . In sources from the 11th century it appears under the name Barjamo . The place belonged to the Lords of Arles in the 10th century . Bargemon was a fief of the Villeneuve family, which played an important role in the history of Provence in the 13th century.
A few kilometers west of Bargemon, Château Favas belonged to the Order of St. John in the 13th century . Only a few remains of the formerly important settlement of Favas, which was destroyed during the Huguenot Wars , have survived .

Culture and sights
The townscape of Bargemon, situated on a ridge above the cliffs of Brovès, has retained its medieval character. Narrow streets with old houses connect numerous small, shady squares with small fountains, one of which from the 18th century was classified as a monument historique . Only a few remains of the former city wall and fortifications and the medieval castle have survived. In addition to the four gates from the 12th century, the church was also integrated into the defense system.
- The Château du Reclos was built in the 19th century.
- The parish church of Saint-Etienne was built in the 14th century.
- The Notre-Dame-de-Montaigu chapel above the village was built in 1609 as a penitentiary chapel. The nave has a groin vault and a wide organ gallery at the rear end. The church tower is very pointed. The church treasures include reredos from the 17th century, angel heads by Pierre Puget and votive tablets.
- Saint-Michel de Favas is a medieval chapel of the Lérins monastery, protected as an Inscrit Monument Historique .
- The pilgrimage chapel Notre-Dame de Favas was built at the beginning of the 13th century and also belonged to the Lérins monastery.
- The former penitential chapel of Saint-Etienne has been restored and now houses a museum and gallery.

- Wilhelm von Bargemon, troubadour in the 13th century, comes from Bargemon.
- The French encyclopaedist Louis Moréri (1643–1680) was born in Bargemon.
