history

The origin of the name Le Muy is not clear. In 1178 it appears in the sources as Modius , the Latin expression for bushel . The same is also true of Muyco , which in Provencal means moist, boggy place .

In the 11th century, Le Muy was initially a fiefdom of Saint-Victor, later the Count of Provence . In the 13th and 14th centuries, part of the rule was held by the Balb de Saint-Alban and Pontevès families. In 1430 the power fell into the hands of the Rascas, who established a marquisate there.

In 1536 the residents resisted the invasion of Provence by Emperor Charles V and planned an assassination attempt. The poet Garcilaso de la Vega was erroneously killed in his place . The insurgents were hanged despite the emperor's promise to spare them if they surrendered. In Le Muy, two signs commemorate the poet and the heroism of the people of Le Muy.

On August 15, 1944, Allied parachutists landed in Le Muy as part of Operation Dragoon to rescue them from the German occupation.
