Cotes de Provence
The Côtes de Provence wine-growing region is located in the east of the Provence wine-growing region and, with around four fifths of it, is by far the largest area. In the west, the appellations of Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence connect . The vineyards include approximately 20,000 hectares of vines in the departments of Alpes-Maritimes , Bouches-du-Rhône and Var and have since 24. October 1977 about the status of a Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC shortly). The three different types of soil and a large number of approved grape varieties also result in a wide variety of wine styles.
Over 80% of the total production, which amounts to around 900,000 hectoliters annually, are rosé wines . This makes Provence in France by far the largest producer of rosé wines and generates around 8% of the world's production.
The rosé wines are often bottled in special, conical or slightly bulbous bottles. However, since this bottle shape has a negative image, quality-conscious winemakers are turning to other bottles.
Grape varieties
- Red wine and rosé wine are made from at least two of the main varieties Cinsault , Grenache , Mourvèdre , Syrah and Tibouren . Barbaroux , Cabernet Sauvignon (maximum share of 30%), Calitor (also called pécoui touar here) and Carignan (maximum share of 30%) are permitted as secondary varieties .
- In general, the proportion of a single main variety must not exceed 90%. In addition, the common minimum proportion of all the main varieties present in wine has been set at 70% since the 2005 harvest and will rise to 80% from 2015.
- The Barbaroux and Calitor grape varieties have not been planted since 1995 and are gradually being replaced by other varieties.
- In addition, a maximum of 10% white grape varieties are permitted in red and rosé wines (see white wine list).
- At least 20% of the rosé wine must be made using the Saignée process.
- The grape varieties Clairette Blanche , Sémillon , Ugni Blanc and Vermentino (also called role here) are permitted for white wine .
