Simiane-Collongue is a French municipality with 5596 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located 15 kilometers south of Aix-en-Provence . Marseille is 25 kilometers away. Neighboring towns are Cabriès , Gardanne , Mimet and Bouc-Bel-Air .
etymology
During the revolution, the municipality was called Simiane-lès-Aix-et-Marseille . It was called Collongue between 1791 and 1814 and Simiane from 1814 to 1919 , before it was finally given its current name.
history
There was a settlement here as early as 7000 years ago. This makes the village the oldest settlement in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. The Romans drained the area. Many Roman villas were built as a result. In the Middle Ages, the villages of Venel and Collongue changed hands frequently. In 1727 several hundred people died of the plague. During the 19th century Simiane remained a small farming village. Two events mean the end of this epoch: from 1876 a local council was elected, in 1877 the place was connected to a railway line. Most of the residents still lived from agriculture. However, various rocks were used industrially in the hills. The proximity to the two large cities of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille often led to rural exodus.
