Wall remains from the 1st century AD have been found. In 1454 René d'Anjou bought the land and owned it until his death in 1480. The Forbin family bought the area in 1482 and in 1676 the residents acquired the land.

From the end of the 17th century, the coal deposits around Gardanne were opened up using the open pit method. Initially, coal was mainly used locally as fuel instead of wood, before commercial operations from Marseille became important customers in the 19th century.

In the second half of the 19th century, Gardanne developed into an industrial location with the opening of an aluminum works by the Pechiney Group and the silting of a coal mine in the district of Biver , which was connected with the opening of the Aix-en-Provence-Marseille line on October 15, 1877 received to the railway network. Within a few decades, the population of the place multiplied, to which the influx of Italians, Armenians, Poles, Czechs, Spaniards and Africans who hired themselves there as workers contributed. In 1809 there were 1,600 inhabitants, in 1900 3,500 and in 1946 8,000. The mine, one of the last in France, closed in 2003.

Several paintings by Paul Cézanne , who stayed here for a few months, were created in Gardanne in the 1880s .

The municipality of Gardanne has been ruled by the French Communist Party since 1977 under Roger Meï. Elections tend to be in favor of the left wing. In contrast, Nicolas Sarkozy managed to get 53.1 percent in the second round of the presidential election in 2007.
