Aurons is a French municipality with 551 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located in the north of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, seven kilometers northeast of Salon-de-Provence . Aurons is remote between Salon-de-Provence and the Durance .
Neighboring communities are Alleins in the north, Vernègues in the east, Lambesc in the southeast, Pélissanne in the south, Salon-de-Provence in the west and Lamanon in the northwest.
history
The town's castle was built in the 10th century. At first it belonged to the Counts of Provence, in 1167 it passed to the Archbishop of Arles . In the 16th century the castle was sold several times and destroyed during the Huguenot Wars . It was later rebuilt. In the 1930s the castle was converted into a kind of youth hostel. After the Second World War, the castle was largely destroyed. In 1956 the pastor of Aurons bought the ruins.
