history
Today's municipality has been inhabited since the Neolithic. In early history there were so-called oppida here . Many villas were built during Roman times, favored by the location on Via Aurelia . In the 10th century Benedictine monks acquired part of the land. In the middle of the 11th century, two cities emerged: One place was formed around the ruler's castle on the hills and today's Trets was built on the plain. Around the year 1200 a mighty castle was built near Trets. In the early 13th century, the residents of Trets organized like a community and elected their representatives. During this time, a new suburb was built around the Saint-Martin de Vidols chapel. In the 14th century a city wall was built around the place. In 1363 there was even a papal university for a short time in Trets. At that time, the city was one of the most important in Provence. The rich city experienced its decline in the 16th century: the castle was abandoned, the suburb around the Saint Martin chapel disappeared. On July 29, 1590 there was a battle between Catholics and Protestants in Trets during the Huguenot Wars. In the 17th century the city experienced a new boom with tanneries and weaving mills.
