Rousset is a French municipality with 4844 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

The municipality is located sixteen kilometers east of Aix-en-Provence in the fertile Trets basin. It extends along the southern slope of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire . Neighboring municipalities are Fuveau , Puyloubier , Châteauneuf-le-Rouge and Peynier .

history

In 124 BC the region was conquered by the Romans. In 102 BC a battle took place near Rousset, in which the Romans were victorious.

The village was first mentioned in a document as Rousselun in 1050 . In the Middle Ages there was a castle around which the village developed. The community was later affected by the wars of religion, but the population continued to grow in the period that followed. The present church was built in 1861.
