Saint-Cannat is a French municipality with 5634 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Aix-en-Provence and the canton of Pélissanne . The municipality is located between Aix-en-Provence et Salon-de-Provence in the valley of the Touloubre river and on Route nationale 7.
history
The place is named after Canus Natus, a 5th century bishop of Marseille . In the 12th century, Archbishop Pierre mentioned Castrum Santi - Cannati in one of his documents . A century later, the residents rose against the Archbishop and the Baron of Les Baux. Around the same time, the Knights Templar settled here.
On June 11, 1909, Saint-Cannat was devastated by a severe earthquake , and in 1984 and 1994 it was affected by floods.
