history
The name of the place is probably derived from cabre , which is the Provencal word for goat. Large herds of goats were kept in the village until the last century. In the 9th and 10th centuries the place was called Castrum de Cabriera , then from 1098 Caprario , from 1204 Cabrer and finally it received its current name. The Ligurians settled in what is now the municipality, as did the Celts later. The Romans also settled here, as evidence shows. In Calas there was an important crossing of the Via Aurelia . When the migration of peoples began in the 5th century, people settled in the mountains. A castle was built there in the 9th century. The village on the plain was surrounded by high walls in the Middle Ages. In 1098, the Saint-Victor Abbey in Marseille became the owner of the local church. During the period up to the French Revolution, the place was owned by various lords. Cabriès suffered from the wars of religion, but was spared from the plague wave of 1720. In 1944 there was a US Army camp near Cabriès. In 1976 the community bought the castle, which had belonged to an artist since 1934.
