history

Paul Cézanne: Le Chateau Noir , National Gallery of Art, Washington (DC) 1900-04

The French painter Paul Cézanne came here from 1897 and liked to visit the Bern restaurant in Le Tholonet, where he preferred duck with olives or daube , a Provencal ragout that he shared with friends such as the sculptor Philippe Solari took.

Cézanne occasionally rented a room in the lonely Château Noir (Black Castle) in order to search for motifs in the area. The castle and its surroundings show several paintings by Cézanne, 19 oil paintings and 20 watercolors.

Georges Duby , historian, is buried in Le Tholonet.
