Meyreuil is a French municipality with 5669 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
Meyreuil is located in the hills of Montaiguet, six kilometers southeast of Aix-en-Provence . Other neighboring towns are Gardanne , Châteauneuf-le-Rouge , Fuveau and Bouc-Bel-Air .
history
The name of the place is said to derive from the Roman general Gaius Marius , who destroyed the Cimbri and Teutons in the battle of Aquae Sextiae (Aix-en-Provence) . However, the place was first documented as Miroil in 1038 .
In the 14th century, the residents built a castle to protect their village. Charles the Lame , King of Naples and Count of Provence, bequeathed the rule to the Dominicans of Aix-en-Provence around 1308 . The castle was destroyed during the French Revolution.
The nearby hamlet of Canet de Meyreuil consisted of only three houses and a shop in 1902.
The Provence power plant went into operation in 1958.
