Charles Rostaing

Charles Rostaing (born October 9, 1904 in Istres , † April 24, 1999 in Saint-Miter-les-Remparts ) was a French Romanist , Provençalist and onomasticist .

life and work

Rostaing studied in Aix-en-Provence with Georges Lote and Emile Ripert , passed the Agrégation in 1928 and was a high school teacher in Alès, Toulon, Nice and Paris until 1946 (from 1934). He completed his habilitation in Paris in 1947 with the two Thèses Essai sur la toponymie de la Provence depuis les origines jusqu'aux invasions barbaren (Paris 1950, Marseille 1973, 1994) and (eds.) Constant Du Hamel, Fabliau (Gap 1953, 1965) and became a professor at the University of Aix-en-Provence . From 1952 to 1967 he held the chair for Romance languages as the successor to Auguste Brun . From 1967 until his retirement he was Professor of “Langue et littérature d'Oc” at the Sorbonne, succeeding Jean Boutière . Rostaing began the work completed by his student Jean-Claude Bouvier on the Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de la Provence (1975 ff.).

Rostaing was a member (majoral) of Félibrige from 1952 , and its president (Capoulié) from 1956 to 1962. The pianist Christine Wodrascka is his granddaughter.
