Istres is a municipality with 43,133 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French department Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .

history

The community is first mentioned in 966 as Ystrio on a map by Konrad the Peaceful . Finds show, however, that people have been here since the 5th century BC. BC settled. In the 12th century the city became a fief of the Lords of Beaux .

Air Force Base

Istres is known for the military airfield Istres-Le Tubé ( Base aérienne 125 Istres-Le Tubé ). The 5000 meter long runway was also an emergency landing site for the space shuttle . The Airbus 340-600 and Airbus A380 were also tested here. The French Air Force stationed there mainly Airbus A330 MRTT and Boeing C-135 tanker aircraft . The base is also the location of the Force de frappe's nuclear weapons . The SNECMA flight test center on this site is also internationally known .

Town twinning

Istres has had a town partnership with Radolfzell in Baden-Württemberg (Germany) since 1974 .
