history
Some finds indicate that hunting in the area of today's Port-de-Bouc was carried out in prehistoric times. The first settlement was the Oppidum Castillon in the 5th or 6th century BC. This area between the wet meadows of the Camargue and the Mediterranean was gradually developed. A port already existed in Port-de-Bouc in the first to fourth centuries. Many graves from the early Middle Ages have been preserved. The construction of the canal from Arles to Port de Bouc in 1834 was a key event in the history of the place. 1866 formed Napoleon III. from parts of the communes of Fos-sur-Mer and Martigues the commune of Port-de-Bouc. On September 2, 1866, the place was hit by a heavy flood. In the second half of the 19th century, the place with its port gained importance. A shipbuilding company set up shop here in 1899. A few years later, two chemical companies also settled in the village. In 1966, 14,000 people from all over the world lived in the village. That year, however, the shipyards closed, which was a disaster for the place. 2000 jobs were lost. However, due to the establishment of the industrial area in Fos-sur-Mer, around 7,500 people came to the city in the 1970s. However, due to crises, the industrial area did not provide the desired performance and the number of inhabitants in Port-de-Bouc decreased again. In the post-war period, René Rieubon was mayor of the municipality for many years from 1944 to 1990.
