Châteauneuf-les-Martigues is a French municipality with 16,850 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
Châteauneuf-les-Martigues is ten kilometers east of Martigues and 35 kilometers west of Marseille . The place is on the Étang de Berre . The village of La Mède is located in the municipality .
history
The earliest traces of human life go back to the Mesolithic (7000–6000 BC). In the Neolithic Age, people began to farm and raise livestock. An ax from this era can be found in the local history museum. The Celts settled here between 900 and 500 BC and founded an oppidum . In 125 BC the Romans conquered the area.
Between the 11th century and the French Revolution, the place was owned by many different lords. Around the year 1000, a castle was built on the slopes south of the village. In 1972 it finally disappeared with the construction of a motorway. In February 1790, Jean Guilet became the town's first elected mayor.
