Rognac is a French municipality with 12,223 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located on the Étang de Berre .
history
The area was first settled more than 5000 years ago. The first inhabitants were hunters who stayed at the Étang de Berre, in the plains, but also in the hills of the hinterland. Towards the end of the 1st millennium BC, the Ligurians founded a settlement on the plain and small retreats in the hills. The Romans, who settled in the region since the end of the 2nd century BC, founded several new places, including Rudanicum , from which the current community name is derived. In the early Middle Ages, the importance of the place declined, but it was never completely abandoned. Around the year 1000, the village master's castle and a settlement in the hinterland were built in the municipality. In the middle of the 15th century, however, this was given up again and people settled again at the Étang de Berre.
The Center Culturel
In 1622 a certain Adam Goyran's house was converted into an oil mill. This communal oil mill came back into the possession of the lord of Rognac in 1702. The oil cooperative worked until 1956, when a 40-day frost break in February, which even frozen the banks of the Étang de Berre, wiped out around 80% of Rognac's olive nurseries. The olive tree activities were ultimately concentrated in the La Fare-les-Oliviers mill . After the building served various companies, it was converted into the Center Culturel and inaugurated in 2014. The building is opposite the church, place de la République.

- Saint-Jacques Church : On June 14, 1664, the Archbishop of Arles, François Adhémar de Monteil de Grignan , ordered the construction of the church. The Goyran family, already mentioned in connection with the Center Culturel , donated the building site and the architect of the city of Aix-en-Provence, Monsieur Jaubert, implemented the building plan, making particular use of the plans of the Aix town hall. The bell tower was built in 1667, at the same time the cemetery wall behind the church.
- The fountain on the Place de la République (at the church): Two fountains were inaugurated in 1897 with extensive festivities: One on the square in front of the church, the other on today's Place der la Liberté (this fountain no longer exists). A Docteur Castel back then: With these two wells, the population has a public water supply for the first time, the beginning of a period of progress .
