history

From the 4th to the 2nd century BC there was an oppidum of the Salluvians in what is now Le Castellas . The Romans occupied the region until the 5th century AD. In the period that followed, the area was repeatedly ravaged by invasions from various tribes. Its inhabitants sought refuge in the village of Le Rocher , of which only a few ruins remain today. Until 1110, Vitrolles belonged in part to the Count of Arles and the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille. From 1110 Vitrolles belonged to the lords of Les-Baux . In 1379 Vitrolles was confiscated by Johanna I , Countess of Provence, and shortly thereafter sold to Baron Fouquet d'Agoult . After the fief came back into the possession of the counts, René I sold it in 1461 to Jean de La Salle . In 1531 it passed to Jean Maynier , the first President of the Aix Parliament . From 1647 until the French Revolution , Vitrolles belonged to the Marquis of Marignane .
