  • L'isle , the historic city center with canals
    • the Quai Brescon , popularly known as the miroir des oiseaux : This former fishing district stretched towards the Ètang de Berre until the beginning of the 20th century, up to the Pointe du Brescon . In the course of leveling the banks of the new Gallifet Canal, through which large ships could now also cross Martigues, large parts of the district were destroyed. Even the imposing Pont du Roi, which connected the island to the Jonquière district, had to give way to a swing bridge in 1929, which was replaced by a lift bridge ( Pont levant ) in 1969 . The irregular shape of the arm of the sea, the alignment of the colored fishermen's houses of different heights and the contrast between the banks gave this remarkable location the name la petite Venise ("Little Venice") and is a preferred object of painters.
