Musée Ziem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Musée Ziem is the municipal museum for art and archeology in Martigues in the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône . It is named after the painter Félix Ziem , who lived in Martigues and created several views of the place.

Location and history

The museum is located in a former customs barracks on Boulevard du 14 Juillet in the Ferrières district . It was founded in 1908 after the painter Felix Ziem donated a study of the painting Toulon, visite du président Émile Loubet aux escadres française et italienne en avril in 1901 to the city. The monumental version of the picture is considered to be one of the artist's major works and is in the Musée national de la Marine in Paris . Ziem did not come from Martigues, but got to know and appreciate the place and its Mediterranean atmosphere as a 19-year-old. He later set up a studio here, in which he painted for several decades. In his work there are a number of views of Martigues and the landscape of the Etang de Berre bay . After his death, his widow donated several paintings to the museum in 1912. The granddaughter Lil Ziem also gave the museum numerous drawings in 1993. In addition, the city acquired many works by other artists for the museum and added an archaeological department to the museum. The museum organizes various temporary exhibitions, is a stage for concerts and offers an educational program for adults and children.

collection

Felix Ziem's works form the basis of the collection. His paintings, watercolors and drawings mainly show motifs from Martigues, views of Venice and pictures from the Orient. There is also a self-portrait in the collection. In addition, there are a number of works by the Marseille School from 1850 to around 1925. These include painters such as Paul Guigou , Henri Manguin , Alphonse Rey , Ange Flégier , René Seyssaud and Émile Loubon , who often chose motifs from the Provencal landscape for their works. There are also paintings by André Derain and Raoul Dufy . The museum has also been collecting contemporary art since 1982, for example works by the artists Claude Viallat , André-Pierre Arnal and Ernest Pignon-Ernest .

There is also an ethnological collection in the museum, in which objects related to fishing and votive art are shown. The museum also has an archaeological collection with objects from excavations in the Martigues area.
