Félix-Francois Georges Philibert Ziem (born February 26, 1821 in Beaune , † November 10, 1911 in Paris ) was a French painter who can be attributed to the Barbizon School .

Life

Félix Ziem was born in Beaune, Burgundy, to a Burgundian mother and a Croatian father. Ziem studied architecture in Dijon and worked as an architect for some time . After several study trips to Italy between 1845 and 1848, he turned his hobby, painting, into a profession. In Venice he found inspiration for his works. He also painted many still lifes , portraits and landscapes (including motifs from Burgundy and Constantinople ) as well as watercolors .

Ziem's ​​first exhibition at the Paris Salon in 1849 quickly became a permanent one. As part of the Barbizon School, he traveled through Europe and in 1860 came to Montmartre , the bohemian district of Paris. His financial success enabled him to support young artists.

In 1857 the French government appointed him Knight of the Legion of Honor in recognition of his art . In 1901, as Peintre Officiel de la Marine, he became the official marine painter of the French Navy with the rank of officer.

Félix Ziem was at the Paris cemetery Pere Lachaise buried.

The Musée Ziem is located in Martigues .
