With his figure drawings and photos in black and white, Pignon-Ernest charges the places and their architecture with meaning, which he finds and personifies in the associated events . The work, on paper and attached to walls, is intended to disappear over time.

In 1978/79 he provided walls in Paris and Charleville , the birthplace of Arthur Rimbaud , with large-format pictures by this writer. One of the artist's favorite places became Naples . For Le soupirail (Das Kellerfernster, 1988), for example, he was inspired by the painting San Gennaro intercede presso la Vergine , created in 1656 by Luca Giordano , which depicts an epidemic of the plague; the body of a dead man is quoted from the lower edge of the painting. For La mort de la vierge (The Death of the Blessed Virgin, 1990) he processed a painting by Caravaggio from 1605/1606. He set up his 80 pictures next to palaces and churches close to the ground.

In 1996 he provided 450 telephone booths in Paris and Lyon under the title Derrière la vitre (Behind the Window) with life-size depictions of known and unknown people. In South Africa he founded the Artistes du monde contre l'Apartheid association . In 2002 he took the photo of the 12-year-old boy who was shot and killed after a demonstration on June 16, 1976 in Soweto , whom he as a young man had a woman carry in his arms, and thus postponed the statement to a present-day problem of the former Symbols for apartheid on: AIDS .
