life and work

Émile Loubon was born in 1809 in Aix-en-Provence, the son of the merchant Noël Augustin François Loubon and his wife Anne-Thérèse, née Michel. He received his artistic training from Jean-Antoine Constantin and from Louis Mathurin Clérian , the director of the drawing school ( École de dessin ) in Aix. In 1829/1830 he stayed in Rome with the painter François-Marius Granet , who came from Aix . In Italy, Loubon mainly created landscape sketches and architectural studies, which later served as a template for numerous paintings.

In 1931 Loubon settled in Paris , where he had a comfortable studio. Here he met fellow artists such as Camille Corot and other painters from the Barbizon School . Especially Constant Troyon particular influence exerted on him. In addition to paintings, he also made lithographs and etchings from 1832, and from 1840 Loubon also worked as an illustrator. In addition to Italian motifs, he painted Provencal landscapes, which he also exhibited in the Salon de Paris from 1833 .

Loubon returned to Provence in 1845, where he initially stayed with the family in Aix. In the same year he took over the position of director of the drawing school ( École gratuite de dessin ) in Marseille . In the following year he founded the Societe des amis des arts de Marseille ("Society of Friends of Art of Marseille"), which from then on organized annual art exhibitions. To this end, he invited his artist friends from Paris, whose work had a lasting effect on the Provencal painters. In 1847 Loubon was accepted into the Académie des Sciences, Lettres et Arts de Marseille . In 1855 he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor .

Émile Loubon: Nazareth

After a trip to Palestine in 1849, Loubon painted a number of oriental motifs. In addition, he also created individual history pictures, religious motifs and portraits. But he is best known for his landscapes from Provence. These pictures are characterized by a skilful lighting that underlines the color spectrum of the south with its ocher tones and a picture structure in which the view is mostly directed into the distance. Often the landscapes show soils and herds of animals marked by drought. Loubon is considered to be the founder of Provencal landscape painting, the École provençale . He had a significant influence on other painters such as Marius Engalière , Auguste Auguier , Paul Guigou , Prosper Grésy , and Adolphe Monticelli .

Émile Loubon died in 1863 after a long illness. His grave is in the Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille.
