Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (born October 14, 1824 in Marseille ; † June 29, 1886 there ) was a French painter and forerunner of Impressionism , of which it is said that his parents came from Italy.

Life

Adolphe Monticelli started school at the Lycée Tiers. He then attended the École des beaux-arts in Marseille from 1842 to 1846 . He then studied at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts with Paul Delaroche .

In Paris, he visited the Musée du Louvre to copy works by classical masters. He was influenced by the works of Eugène Delacroix and, in addition to portraits, also painted oriental scenes. Despite his academic training, he painted with strong brushstrokes, without the smooth academic precision that was customary at the time.

In 1855 he met Narcisso Virgilio Díaz de la Peña , a member of the Barbizon school who lost a leg as a result of a snakebite, and accompanied him while painting in the forest of Fontainebleau . In the 1860s he met the young Paul Cézanne and influenced his painting. Between 1878 and 1884 the two artists often painted landscapes together. After 1870 Monticelli returned to Marseille, where he lived in modest circumstances.

Vincent van Gogh was inspired by Monticelli but never met him, as he had died in 1886 a few months before van Gogh's arrival in Paris.

The Monticelli monument, designed by sculptor Auguste Carli in 1909, is located in Parc Longchamp in Marseille.
