Georg Gustaf Nordensvan (born December 3, 1855 in Stockholm , † April 8, 1932 there ) was a Swedish writer and art historian .

Life

Georg Nordensvan was born as the second son of the army officer Otto Nordensvan (1811-1892) and his wife Louise Hildegard Roos. After graduating from high school, he studied at Uppsala University from 1874 , then joined the army like his brother Carl Otto Nordensvan and passed the officers' examination in 1876. He resigned from the army in the same year because of health problems. Instead, Nordensvan devoted himself to art studies at the Art Academy (1877-1882) and made his debut in 1877 as an author of aesthetic literature . Writing became his main occupation after he left the art academy. In 1884 Nordensvan married Anna Fransiska Ekenstierna. From 1883 to 1886 he was the editorial secretary of the newspaper Ny Illustrerad Tidning and from 1885 to 1902 editor of the Nornan calendar .

In his novels he joined Impressionism of the 1880s and wrote as an art critic for several major newspapers ( Dagens Nyheter , Aftonbladet and others).

Nordensvan is best known for his work on art and theater history after the end of the 19th century. In these areas he wrote some standard works such as Svensk teater och svenska skådelspelare från Gustaf III till våra dagar ("The Swedish theater and drama of Gustaf III. To our days") and Svensk konst och svenska konstnärer i 19: e århundradet ("Swedish Art and Swedish Artists in the 20th Century ”). He created the illustrated topographical work on Stockholm Mälardrottningen from 1896 to 1897. He was also the author of numerous articles for the Nordisk familjebok - Konversationslexikon och Realencyklopedi .

From 1912 to 1914, Nordensvan was committee leader of the National Museum , was an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts and an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University.

His works are distinguished by their keen, lively art of portrayal. A knowledgeable and accurate criticism was characteristic of the interested art connoisseur Nordensvan.
