history

The museum goes back to a foundation by the sculptor Jules Cantini. In 1916 he left his art collection and his house on Rue Grignan in the city's 6th arrondissement to the city of Marseille. Together they should form the basis for a newly founded art museum. The house is a 17th century Hôtel particulier built in 1694 by the Compagnie du Cap Nègre . The Montgrand family lived here from 1709 to 1801 and then various owners before purchasing Cantini in 1888. After his death, the building was converted for museum purposes and opened in 1936 as a museum for modern art. Since then, the collections have been expanded considerably through acquisitions and donations.

Paul Signac: Entrée du port de Marseille

The museum mainly shows works of art from the 20th century. In the works created at the beginning of the century, there are repeated regional references to the Mediterranean landscape. Examples include the pointillist Cityscape entrée du port de Marseille by Paul Signac from 1911 or the landscape Pinède in Cassis in the style of Fauves by André Derain of 1907. Also by Paul Cezanne -influenced image Usine à l'estaque of Raoul Dufy from the year 1908 shows a landscape in southern France.

Other important works in the museum belong to the Surrealism style . These include, for example, the paintings Monument aux oiseaux by Max Ernst from 1927 or Antille by André Masson from 1946. The man portrait Académie d'homme by Henri Matisse was created around 1900 . The museum owns the rather dark picture Tête de femme souriante from 1943 by Pablo Picasso. Paintings such as the portrait de Diego ou Tête noire by Alberto Giacometti , Nature morte à la lampe by Balthus , Vénus du trottoir by the period after the Second World War Jean Dubuffet or a self-portrait by Francis Bacon .
