Penwood State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the municipality of Bloomfield . It is located on Talcott Mountain and connects seamlessly to Talcott Mountain State Park in the south . To the north is Wilcox Park . The Metacomet Trail runs through the entire length of the park. There are picnic and hiking opportunities and there are several cycle paths.

history

Penwood State Park was donated to the state in 1944 by Curtis H. Veeder, an entrepreneur and inventor (founder of Gilbarco Veeder-Root ). He wished that the area, which had given him a lot of pleasure due to its lovely nature, would be left in its natural state. He had made some trails and often went hiking in the area with his wife. Lake Louise , a scenic dead lake on the mountain ridge , was named after his wife.

geography

The 318 hectare (787 acre) park stretches along Metacomet Ridge , which stretches from Long Island Sound near New Haven north through the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts to the Vermont border. Therefore, the landscape is shaped by the ridge. The park's water flows accordingly in two directions: to the west, the park drains through the Lucy Brook into the Farmington River ; to the east, Griffin Brook and tributaries of Tumble Brook and Wash Brook flow to the Connecticut River . In addition to Lake Louise , there are other small ponds: Shadow Pond and Gale Pond , which is at the transition to Talcott Mountain State Park.
