Jonquières is a district of the southern French town of Martigues in the Bouches-du-Rhône department . It forms the southern half of the municipality of Martigues and lies on the banks of the Étang de Berre and the Canal de Caronte .
history
In the Middle Ages, Jonquières was an independent market town in the vicinity of the small town of Lisle , located on an island in the Canal de Caronte . In April 1581, the newly founded town of Martigues emerged from the two places and the market town of Ferrières north of the canal .
