The Canal de Caronte (also: Chenal de Caronte ) is a shipping canal in southern France that runs between Port-de-Bouc and Martigues . The sea channel has a length of about 6.5 kilometers and connects the Gulf of Fos in the Mediterranean with the lagoon lake Étang de Berre . A number of industrial, commercial and leisure harbors are located within the canal. Particularly noteworthy is the port of Lavéra , which supplies a connected oil refinery .

course

The canal begins in the Golfe de Fos at the entrance to the port of Port-de-Bouc and runs from here in a structurally modified original lagoon lake (Étang de Caronte), which narrows noticeably to the east and before it flows into the Étang der Berre in the urban area of Martigues is split into two canal arms by an island. The northern arm (Canal Baussengue) initially leads to a marina in the city, while the southern arm (Canal Gallifet) is directly connected to the Étang de Berre. This way, cargo ships can enter the industrial zone at the Étang de Berre with the help of a bascule bridge . Taking into account its dimensions, the canal can be navigated by seaworthy vessels as well as by inland vessels .

In Port-de-Bouc there is a connection for barges to the Canal de Fos à Port-de-Bouc , via which the port of Fos-sur-Mer and the canalized Rhône can be reached via other waterways . At the eastern end of the Canal de Caronte, the Canal de Marseille au Rhône can be reached, which runs along the southern bank of the Étang de Berre, protected by dykes , and which enabled a canal connection to the port of Marseille via the Tunnel du Rove until its collapse in 1963 . The tunnel is no longer passable today.
