The Canal de Marseille au Rhône is a shipping canal in the south of France . The sea canal connects the port of Marseille with the Étang de Berre . The canal has been impassable since part of the Tunnel du Rove collapsed on June 17, 1963.
history
The canal, built between 1923 and 1926, connected the economically thriving region around the salt water lake Étang de Berre with the greater Marseille area .

It begins at Port de la Lave in the northwest section of the port of Marseille , where it crosses the Estaque Mountains in a north-westerly direction with the Tunnel du Rove . After a tunnel length of 7.1 kilometers, it reaches the municipality of Marignane and runs a further 3.4 kilometers on the surface. Finally it flows into the Étang de Bolmon , a lagoon lake , which it follows - protected by dykes from the open side - to the west. At Châteauneuf-les-Martigues he changes to the Étang de Berre , which he also accompanies diked to Martigues . Here it joins the Canal de Caronte and ends its independent course.
