The Marseille Europort (new name and the extension of the - Autonomous Port of Marseille - Port autonome de Marseille ) is the port of the city of Marseille in France.

Marseille Europort should not be confused with the better known Europoort , part of the port of Rotterdam .

history

Erected in 1844, it replaced the old port of the city of Marseille in its main function of linking shipping on the Rhone and the Mediterranean . The port began operating at the Bassin de la Joliette , which is now only used as a ferry terminal or has been rededicated as a business district and gradually moved further north as the city expanded. The Port Autonome de Marseille now extends from the city center to the Étang de Berre and the basin of Fos-sur-Mer . Autonomous because, as a state institution, it is withdrawn from the administration of the municipality (since 2008 the status of a "grand port maritime" has existed as a successor regulation ).

Marseille port

After Rotterdam , Antwerp and Hamburg, the port is the fourth largest port in Europe and the largest in terms of transshipment in the Mediterranean . A total of around 81 million tons of goods were handled here in 2016, of which 12.9 million tons were bulk goods . The number of containers handled was 1.4 million TEU in 2017  (2016: 1.25 million TEU).

Its hinterland as a port includes the region as well as Lyon and the industry in the Rhone Valley, and via the South European Oil Pipeline (SEPL) also the refineries in Reichstett (Alsace), Cressier  (CH) and Karlsruhe  (D).

Economic rivals in shipping are mainly Barcelona , Genoa , Rotterdam , but also the small Italian town of Gioia Tauro on the Strait of Messina due to the increasing importance of container handling worldwide .

location

Marseille is located on the left bank of the Rhone (Grand-Rhône) and its main mouth on the north bank of the Mediterranean. Since the mouth of the Rhône is not navigable for ships, ports were needed to handle inland and maritime shipping . Marseille itself offered a wide natural harbor , at the northeast end of which is the old town. You can get an overall impression from the country by driving into Marseille on the A 55 motorway on the coastal road. Upstream are the Îles d'Frioul with their leisure marina (initially the quarantine port Dieudonné, now Port Frioul).

To the west of the city, the flat landscape in the mouth of the Rhône is characterized by brackish swamps, which correspond to the Camargue on the other side of the Rhône . There the Gulf of Fos-sur-Mer is located directly at the mouth of the Rhône. In the northern and eastern parts of the gulf, important port and industrial facilities were built.

The neighboring port is in the east of the small town of La Ciotat , also part of the communauté urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole (30 km). A little further follows the French military port of Toulon (70 km).
