The military port of Toulon is a naval base of the French Navy in Toulon . It is located on the Côte d'Azur at the eastern end of the Golfe du Lion . The expansion into a military port took place around 1486. Louis XIV enlarged it considerably. Today it is the largest French military port, in which around 60% of the warship tonnage of France is stationed, and the base of the French fleet in the Mediterranean .

During the Second World War, the port was subject to the Vichy regime until the German occupation . On November 27, 1942 , the Vichy fleet sank there .
