Ehrenfels Castle (Styria)
Ehrenfels Castle

The Ehrenfels Castle is a hilltop castle in Kammern im Liesingtal , a market town with 1,588 inhabitants (1 January 2020) in the Austrian province of Styria .

location

Ehrenfels Castle is located above the Gföhler Wand near Kammern at an altitude of around 1150 meters. A narrow, steep path leads from the neighboring Kamerstein Castle (also Kammerstein) to the castle. The complex is surrounded by vertical cliffs and otherwise steep, difficult-to-access terrain, and apart from the remains of the keep, it has been almost completely destroyed.

history

The castle was one of the holdings of the Ehrenfels who immigrated from the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland . It is referred to as their main festival and is mentioned in a document in 1229. The Ehrenfels were feudal people of the Bamberg Monastery . In the uprising of the Landsberg Confederation against Duke Albrecht I in 1292 , they were on the side of the rebels and, after its suppression, were obliged to pay compensation to Admont Abbey by handing over goods.

From 1356 to 1362 Wulfing von Ehrenfels was Bamberg's nurse and vice cathedral in St. Leonhard in Lavanttal . His four sons expanded the parental home into a fortified castle. Two of these brothers were notorious highwaymen and privateers. For example, they captured Bishop Albert von Passau , Duke Albrecht II . had invited to his wedding in Vienna , en route in St. Pölten and held him for almost a year at Schloss Kammer in Upper Styria to extort ransom. For this they and their accomplices in Salzburg and Passau were banned from church . Duke Albrecht freed the bishop and put an end to their activities.

Another member of the family was Bishop of Basel from 1381 and Bishop of Lavant from 1411 : Wolfhard von Ehrenfels . The Ehrenfels family died out in 1422. In 1439 the castle is still called "Veste Ernvels" and around 1500 as "Upper Castle". In the time after that, it must have been abandoned and given up.
