Albert II of Saxe-Wittenberg
Albert II of Saxony-Wittenberg (* around 1285; † May 19, 1342 in Passau ) was Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Passau from 1320 to 1342 .
Life
Albert was the third son of Duke Albrecht II of Saxony-Wittenberg from the Ascanians and Agnes von Habsburg , a daughter of King Rudolf von Habsburg . Destined for a spiritual career, he was canon of Mainz and pastor of St. Stephen in Vienna. 1320 Albert was by Pope John XXII. appointed Bishop of Passau . In the throne dispute between Ludwig the Bavarian and Frederick the Fair , he stood on the side of his Habsburg cousin Friedrich, whom he also supported in the battle of Mühldorf in 1322 . In Passau he had the Neumarkt, destroyed in 1298, rebuilt and sold the town hall back to the Passau citizens.
He is buried in Passau Cathedral .
