Wolfgang Count of Salm

Wolfgang Graf von Salm (* around 1514; † December 5, 1555 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and from 1541 to 1555 Prince-Bishop of Passau . He came from the Salm-Neuburg sideline of the Salm family .

Life

The son of the general Niklas Graf Salm (1459–1530, since 1528 ruling Count von Neuburg as Nikolaus I ) received a thorough humanistic education, which he completed with a study trip through Italy. In 1530 he became canon in Salzburg and Passau and in 1534 cathedral provost in Passau.

On November 11, 1540 which elected Domkapitel the 26-year-olds on the recommendation of the German king and later Emperor Ferdinand I to the Prince Bishop of Passau. The papal confirmation followed on February 18, 1541, the episcopal ordination by the Regensburg auxiliary bishop Johann Kluspeck in 1542.

Salm held state parliaments in 1541, 1543 and 1545, which mainly dealt with the regulation of imperial taxes. The court painter and sculptor Wolf Huber was in his service and the controversial theologian Jakob Ziegler found accommodation with him. He was anxious to find a compromise with the Protestants and in 1552 was involved in the conclusion of the Passau Treaty .

His relative (son of his cousins), Count Anton von Salm , saved as the last abbot of the monastery Hornbach the relics of St Pirminius from the grip of the Reformation attached sovereign and worked 1556/57 as president of the Imperial Chamber at Speyer .
