Georg Hessler

Georg Hessler , also Georg Heßler , Georg von Hessler , Georg von Heßler and Georg von Hasler (* 1427 in Bamberg ; † September 21, 1482 in Melk ) was cardinal and from 1480 to 1482 Prince-Bishop in the Diocese of Passau .

Life

From around 1446 he studied at the universities of Vienna , Leipzig , Cologne , Heidelberg and Pavia . There he received his doctorate in 1454 as Doctor iuris utriusque . In 1458 he was ordained a priest by Giovanni de Castiglione , Bishop of Pavia and later cardinal. From 1458 to 1460 Hessler was provost of the cathedral in Worms and by 1460 at the latest he was priest in Cologne. In 1466 he became canon in Speyer . Hessler worked for various ecclesiastical and secular lords and had been in the service of Duke Albrecht VI since 1460 . in Vienna.

After his death in 1463 he became chancellor of Archbishop Ruprecht of Cologne , later serving his successor Hermann IV of Hesse . In 1474 Emperor Friedrich III appointed him . to his advice and then to the protonotary. As his envoy, together with Alexander Numai, he played a key role in bringing about the marriage between the later Emperor Maximilian I and Maria of Burgundy . Active in a diplomatic mission in Rome, he was also notary and trainee lawyer for Pope Sixtus IV from 1476 .

In the consistory of December 10, 1477, Hessler received the cardinal's hat from Sixtus IV and shortly afterwards became cardinal deacon of Santa Lucia in Orphea . In 1480 the Pope appointed him Bishop of Passau at the suggestion of the Emperor , although the cathedral chapter had chosen Friedrich Mauerkircher . The Pope himself donated his episcopal ordination on February 13, 1480 in Rome.

In connection with the violent seizure of the bishopric of Passau , there were disputes with the supporters of the opposing bishop Friedrich Mauerkircher. In 1482 the Ilzstadt was shot at from the fortress Oberhaus and largely destroyed, an attack on the fortress failed.

Shortly afterwards, Bishop Hessler died unexpectedly on board a ship on the Danube near Melk. He was buried in the Maria am Gestade church in Vienna.
