Albert III of angle
Albert von Winkel (* unknown; † November 19, 1380 in Passau ), also Albrecht von Winkel , was the 46th Bishop of Passau from 1363 to 1380 (as Albert III) .
Live and act
Little is known about the early years in Albert von Winkel's life; he can only be verified as provost from 1358 onwards. In 1363 he was elected bishop by the Passau cathedral chapter .
During his term of office - which was all in all characterized by major disputes with the citizens of Passau - the largest civil uprising the city has ever seen occurred. The uprising culminated in the Battle of Erlau in September 1367 , in which the bourgeois troops under the command of Andreas Haller suffered a devastating defeat against the bishop's army. In the following arbitration award from 1368, civil rights were re-regulated. Among other things, the council received the right to use the seal. In 1372 Albert even awarded the citizens the so-called “Umgeld” (a tax on beer, wine and meat).
