Johann von Scharffenberg

Johann von Scharffenberg (* before 1358; † February 3, 1387 ; also Scharfenberg or Schärffenberg ) was the 47th Bishop of Passau from 1381 until his death .

Life and accomplishments

He came from the noble family of Scharffenberg , who had been resident in Carniola ( Scharffenberg Castle near Ratschach ) and in Friuli ( Soffumbergo Castle near Ciudale ) for several centuries . As early as 1358 he was named as Passau canon .

As Provost he was elected Bishop of Passau in 1381. As prince-bishop, he ensured that the castles and goods of the bishopric that had been forcibly pledged - with the exception of Obernberg , Mattsee and Schallenberg - were returned to it. He actively supported the University of Vienna .
