history

The castle was owned by the Passau bishopric and was probably built around 1231. In 1260, the Passau ministerial Heinrich de sancto Ulrico appeared in a notarized sea device foundation at the Wilhering monastery and called himself Heinrich de Salchinberc in this . However, the Sankt Ulricher kept the name "von Schallenberg", although they were no longer fiefdoms around 1300. 1308 a Christian von Urleugsb (p) erg appears on Schallenberg. In 1360 the castle was given to Ulrich Leutzeneder by the Passau bishop Gottfried von Weißeneck as pledge. In 1378, Dankwart Herleinsperger followed in the pledge, this was also enfeoffed with the castle by the Passau bishop. In 1428 the rule came back to the Schallenbergers through Kaspar von Schallenberg . The castle remained in the family until 1660. (The Schallenbergs' crypt is located in the Niederwaldkirchen cemetery chapel dedicated to St. Joseph .)

In 1440 the castle was destroyed by the Hussites . The castle then fell into disrepair under Christoph von Schallenberg († 1542); at that time the seat of the court was transferred to the Schallenberg court office in Praitenfelden . Count Christoph Ernst von Schallenberg sold the castle and the court seat to Count Otto von Seeau zu Helfenberg in 1660 .

Schallenberg castle ruins today

Schallenberg is depicted as a ruin in the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674 , although the walls were still upright at that time. Today one can still see a system secured by two deep section trenches carved out of the rock . Traces of the wall are still there, namely completely overgrown remains of a 2 × 3 meter long, approx. 1.5 meter high, standing wall made of well-worked stones.

The Schallenberg family has owned the facility again since 1982. The historically significant facility was placed under monument protection. A sketch of the castle complex is available.

The structure is not easy to find because the route is not signposted. If you drive from Kleinzell to Apfelsbach, after 500 m the Ed goods road branches off to the left; You have to follow this to the Seltenhofgut. From there a partially overgrown footpath leads through the forest to the castle ruins.
